The downfall of Spartacus' army started when for unknown reasons, the army split in two, with Crixus leading the Gauls and Germans on a march on Rome, while Spartacus led the rest further into rural area. This separation led Crixus' force caught by a superior force and destroyed. Still unknown as to whether it was part of the plan or for vengeance of Crixus' death, Spartacus turned to move further into the Roman Empire conquering city after city. This led to full power being given to Marcus Crassus, a wealthy senator who immediately raised four legions with his own money, found and fought a massive battle with Spartacus' forces, and finally killing the escaped gladiator. Crassus didn't let any live, and crucified all prisoners taken from the battle along the road from Capua to Rome.
